Sample test for speaking(Oct. 4th 2007)

Here is some questions of my examiner which asked on Oct. 4th 2007:

Section1:

What's your full name?
How do you feel about music?
Do the people need music?
Do they have enough time to do that?
What do you do in your spare time?

Section2:

Talk about a project which you have done at home or so?
What was that?
How did you do?
When did you do?
Was that difficult?

Section3:

Education for child and sending them to school is important?
How the parents can help with assignment's of their child?
Do you think nowadays homework's of high school children has become more difficult that it was in the past?

Sample test for speaking

The speaking test consists of three parts. Part 1 takes 4 to 5 minutes. Part 2 takes 3 to 4 minutes and part 3 takes 4 to 5 minutes. We will now look in on a speaking test interview.

Interviewer: Good morning. May I have a look at your passport?
Asana: Yeah.

Int.: And your name is?
Asana: My first name is Asana which means wild field or something like that. The reason my parents called me that is because my father just liked the sound of it. My family name is Tamaki. It's not a very common name in Japan, but I think it's easy to pronounce for English people.

Int.: All right Asana. In this first part I am going to ask you some questions about yourself. Where do you come from?
Asana: I'm from Japan, Yokohama which is (a) very very big city, close to Tokyo. I think the population is more than three million. But actually I was born in China, Beijing which is (a) huge city too. And my family moved to Yokohama when I was three years old. And I've recently applied for the citizenship in Australia because I don't like the huge population and pollution in Yokohama.

Int.: So, tell me what you like about Yokohama.
Asana: Well, it's exciting. For example, there are many shops, restaurants, and markets and people everywhere.

Inter.: All right Asana. Now tell me: What are you doing at present?
Asana: Well, I am looking for work. Fortunately there are lots of vacancies for my profession. I am really looking forward to working so that I can be independent financially. My parents have spent a lot of money on me.

Int.: And what kind of work do you do?
Asana: In Japan I was working for the government as a nurse, but it was a very hard job. And I did that for three years. Then I went to New Zealand to study English. And I moved to Australia about a year ago to study for my PhD. And as I told you before I am looking for employment right now.

Int.: Ok Asana. Now we move on to Part 2 of the speaking test. Have a look at this. Read it carefully. You have about 1 minute to think about your answer. Then approximately 1 to 2 minutes to talk to me about what's on the slip. You can use a pen and paper to make some notes.

At this point you need to brain storm for ideas. This is an example of how you could
make your notes.

Int.: All right. Are you ready?
Asana: Yes. I like classical music, and also folk music. Classical music is very relaxing. And folk music is interesting because it tells us (about) people's culture or history. And..... but I don't really listen to music much because I am very busy. I have to work because I've got a part time job and I have to shop and cook. And I like to read in my spare time. I usually listen to music in my car because I've got a really good sound system in my car. When my mother was young, Japanese people were just beginning to listen to western music in Japan. But now western style music is actually very popular in Japan. And in fact a lot of the music that young people in Japan listen to today is in English.

Inter.: All right Asana. We move on to Part 3 of the test now. What influence do you think music has on life?
Asana: Well, the effects of music can be good. It helps us to relax. And also to enjoy ourselves when we get together. But on the other hand, it can incite feelings of nationalism and some modern music encourages drug use or violence.

Int.: What part does music play in your culture?
Asana: Well, in the past Japanese music was quite nationalistic. It was used to encourage love for Japan or something like that. But today people listen to all types of music as they do in countries like America or the UK. And in future I hope music in Japan will improve because I don't think it's very good right now.

Int.: Ok. How would you define music?
Asana: Could you please repeat that question again?

Int.: How would you define music?
Asana: Well, it's something (that) sounds beautiful and helps us to relax. And it's a part of all cultures. All ages listen to it. And it can be used for both good and bad.

Int.: Thank you Asana. Your speaking test is over now. You can enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Asana: Thank you. I hope you have a good weekend too.

How to prepare ourselves to take an exam?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

One or two weeks before exam date start to create a situation as if you are under exam condition!

How?!

I'll tell you!

For reading and listening skills prepare Sample sheets like those on the picture above and time yourself just like exam condition.

For writing time yourself again and write on specific papers.
(please note that you should write every other line with a legible handwriting and raise your hand when you run out paper!why?because like exam condition you undoubtedly will run out paper and ask supervisors to bring you extra paper. Don't worry they do that otherwise they will be punished by ielts.org!)

Last but not least, for speaking test choose a topic and start to tell about that by a loud voice.

Good luck…

4 Steps Test for your listening skill:

Ready to test your listening!
Here is a good tactic to improve your listening skill:

1.Choose a good and useful transcript and play your machine. Follow the lines when the narrator or speakers pronounce the words. Don't whisper or move your head. Just follow the words by a penile or your finger and move your eyes. Be careful of not missing any sentence.

2.Rewind the tape and start again. Pause your machine after each sentence or 3-4 words and read them out loudly. It help you to pronounce them correctly and also your mind reread them after a while!(believe me in this method)

3.Rewind the tape again. Leave your transcript somewhere and start to write the text as a whole. Pause your machine after every three or four words and write them down.
It helps you to correct your spelling mistakes and memorize the sentences.

4.Finally,check your writing which is done in section 3 for spelling mistakes, capital letters, punctuation marks or so...

Enjoy it step by step!

I'm sure it will work for you…try it and enjoy…

Some tips for buying the Listening books:

Here are some tips which help you to buy more informative & useful listening books for IELTS or practicing English:

- Please note that the book you want to buy has got Transcript. (some of books such as Tune in or so has not got any transcript.)It's important when you want to practice 4 Steps Test

- It's better that your book has got Answer key. Other wise if you're amateur or are not familiar with these types of book, maybe you would be misled.

- I wholeheartedly recommend you to buy Tactics For Listening which has got every day conversational dialogues in American English accent but because of publishing in Oxford University Press is very useful for IELTS candidates.

- Pay attention to book's CD and when you buy it check it for finding any damage or problem(maybe it has got some problems & it is not readable by your machine). Then if it is corrupted you must pay back to the vendor.

Exam results on 21st of July

Here is my IELTS result on 21 July 2007.I'm sure I will gain 6.5 on 6 Oct. 2007.
Writing:6.5
Speaking:5.5
Listening:6.5
Reading:5
Overall:6
I should work on Reading module to improve it.

I am so happy stopping IELTS exam at British Council!
A unfair & mafia organization which make candidates offside down & nervous with improper system.

In fact that is only a name. There is not any English native speaker there.

This is my final exam that I am going to take it. After then I will try on other countries such as Dubai,Turkey,Azarbayjan,Armenia,or so.

Speaking & writing always are assessed unfair.
Because of improper judgment or that sort of thing.

Error is possible in each exam but I am sure some people deliberately meddle in the results. In fact they are very strict person to give you your own score.

Anyway…it went…but I believe in other countries with this knowledge we can reach better results.

We Iranians, unfortunately are not compassionate & kind to each other. In fact we want to show our priority & ability over others.

The lack of patriotic sense or so makes us spiteful & improves the sense of enmity among people.

All in all we should not be disappointed. life is going on and this is not a defeat…

Time management & tips

Set aside time to plan for four modules under exam condition is very important.

Speaking:

Speak relevant, fluent, gently(if you are a fast speaker, please be aware of incorrect sentences[do not be panic]),and also with proper eye contact.

If you pose wrongly, if you said wrong sentence, cut it and start with new sentence.

show your ability to jump from one idea to new one. Do your best try.

Cope with stress. If you are a nervous person like me, take a Indral pill with low dose(10 mill).I'm sure it calms you and your heart beat will be moderate.

Do not lose your time under exam condition. Despite stopping by examiner under exam condition during the interview, do not pause or think about your faults.

Focus on his/her face, speak as much fluent as possible.

Reading:

Time yourself for each section. You have 3 section which you should spend 20 minutes on each section. Do not spend time on each section more than 20-21 minutes.

Do not think about a specific question more than 1-1/30 minutes. You have not enough time to think deeply. Leave it easily and come to another question.

Writing:

Start with Task 2.Spend almost 30-32 minutes on it. Then review it. Find your faults. Correct them.

Continue with Task 1.Spend almost 15-17 minutes on it. Then review it. Find your faults. Correct them.

If you have extra time review more than once.

***a 250-word essay with two times previewing is worth more than a 350-word essay without previewing***

Listening:

To not Missing conversation do following tips:

-Follow dialogues & monologues as much as possible with careful concentration

-When the tape starts, for example, he/she said "now answer question 1 to 7"
do not pay attention only one question follow the words which written for question 1 and 2.You have found an answer for 1,follow 2 and 3 with your fingers and so on until you come to 7.
If you lose one of these answeres,do not worry, just go on & listen carefully to find
the other answers.

-At the of the listening test when you are given 10 minutes to transfer your answer to the answer sheet, do not waste your time; act as much fast as possible.
Be aware of capital letters, logic answers, gramatical problems and so on.

-Multiple choice questions in this module & also in reading are the most difficult type of questions. There is no negative mark for guessing ,then if you doubt to choose a answer, do not hesitate choose one possibility.

Over to you dear candidate...

Read out aloud:

I did not use to believe improving English by method which offered me to reading aloud. For the first time my tutor told me this is a useful method that can help you to speak fluently, memorize key words as you listen or so.

To be honest, I thought this is ridiculous & without advantages.

Little by little I found out that this effective method of learning is very fruitful to improve our skills. When you are reading aloud, the part of your brain where is responsible for language is starting to skim & follow the words which will be reviewed after a couple next.In fact, read out aloud is one of the usful methods which helps you
to learn a foreign language as much fluent as possible.

Moreover,it makes you faster & faster in Speaking module.I wholehearthedly support it.

Try it please.I'm sure you enjoy it especially when you're in public place, among your friends!

Some tips

From tonight onwards I have decided continuing to write, listen, and practice my skills. Although I could not to be successful under exam condition I do not allow a piece of paper to assess my knowledge!

For listening we can use BBC world on satellite, many CDs in markets. for writing it would be better to memorize one essay or two essays of book entitled TOEFL ESSAY per week to improve our ideas.
For reading I myself prefer to read newspapers & Fact Files or so.

Finally for speaking what if we have a good partner to listen us. But maybe our words make him/her angry or he/she goes mad!

Note that choose a patient partner is an essential issue!

To put in a nutshell, I myself want to keep my knowledge update since then.

And you…! Yourself should pay attention to what to do!
Note time flies…Does not stop for you…we should not lose our time…

Good luck…

How do I assesse the IELTS exam which was held on 21 & 25 July at British Council

Listening,reading & Writing:

All in all,to tell thetruth I should say I do not complain about exam like previous time.Unfortunately I could not to show my best but I did my best try even I could not catch 6.5.I will trymore & more to catch my favourite results.

I coutinue giving tips of IELTS on this blog.Do not doubt I am here for you & you are there for me.

an advice

If you wanna take an exam please go to Ministry of Science or Armenia...don't try in British Council....that's so injustice....

you know...

Back side of IELTS result

IELTS RESULTS

You can see my injustice result here. The people who work in British Council are some Persians who intentionally catch your rights.
About my listening and reading modules, they are true, but speaking and writing to be honest with you I should say those are a lie.
When they see you're a good speaker they wanna make you let down.
That was unpredictable for me,I didn't think that I catch these results…
I know difficult words,in fact I have a dictionary in my brain!
My writing is 5 band score?!
Shame on all guys who have assessed that.
I don't know how I can describe my situation after collect my results, but I should only say I don’t allow them to bother me with this ridiculous result and improper system.
Speaking:6
Listening:6
writing:5
reading:5.5
Overall:5.5

This defeat is like a bridge to catch all of my expectation…
I'm sure…

Under exam condition in British council:

For three another section you should be present in British School situated back side of Embassy. I remember I was there at 7:45 a.m.;they opened the door at 8:30 a.m..
After some inspection we entered the school and found our places.
My exam place was situated in Basketball court!
It has a ridiculous restroom. I ask one of supervisor that dear Sir there isn't any tap water in the toilet! he said don't worry that's one of restroom based on English style! I said with myself shame on you English toilet hasn't any soft soap or water?!
Anyway ….in this condition you should be cool!
You should install your ID on your shirts after then take your seat.
That was territory of Britain, all of female examiners were without scarf but one of them pretend that she is very Muslim!
Oh,and I should say I spent 10 minutes to find my ID!!!Gosh…
They started with Listening & finished with Reading. During the exam that Muslim examiner shouted some instruction to show their ability to manage us!
Do this ,don't that. Don't touch, start at that….!!!
I remember I was turning over the pages of questions under exam condition, suddenly one of supervisor closed it and said don't touch it!!!
Injustice I was just having a look at it!
They consecutively said us 'please keep your cell phone off', don't start to write any things before instructions.
Ride your own business and don't pay attention to these meaningless words!
Important thing:
Don't use drinks, refreshments, water a lot before taking exam.Otherwise, you need to go to the restroom for many times! They don't allow you to go to the restroom during the exam.
Bring some sweets, chocolates, dried nuts…with yourself to refresh your mind. Don't chew bubble gum; it makes you hungry. Pay attention to djmamal's advices!
The Listening exam against IDP is given with wireless headphone. You should watch your times, be aware of cruel examiners and keep calm.
After exam you feel you have become free from this prison like culprits after 100 years!
After 12-14 days you can collect your results. If you pass it, I should say good for you. Otherwise, woe are you!!!
All in all,to be honest with you,I should say in spite of charge a lot of money, that was not good situation to take exam.It caused bad effect on our minds, and in this case our anxiety increased.

Thanks for all of problems in this condition by charge of 130,000 tomans!

Personal experiences for Speaking module:

If that's your first session, don't worry;just keep smile at everyone whether female or male, guard or examiner.Despite this fact that the most of them are Persian, unfortunately they wanna show their ability to speak in English!
As far as I know,I asked one of them to show me a restroom.I posed my question in Farsi;he said "I'm sorry"!!!
Then,I switched to English:could you please show me a Water Closet!
Suddenly his cell phone rang, and he started to speak in Farsi! shame on him…
When you speak with your interviewer,be happy, speak loudly, show yourself esteem, look at their eyes, don'y worry about any things and also tell lie!
Yeah!Why not!
For example if they ask about your house, tell them :
I live in a skyscraper,I keep some dinosaurs on 99th floor! My mother has decorated it with colorful papers and balloons.
That sort of things!
Ha ha ha ha....
They wanna assess your ability to speak English not catch your red hands when you lie!
There are some seats in waiting room where you can be relax on them.Don't have any stress start to speak wth candidates;I think this helps you to release your tension.
Don't pay attention to the negative words such as Oh shit, damn ,Oh no,...hey you!,...or something like these, just be positive.
If you are very hasty & panicky baby you can take a Propranolol(Indral) pill with a low dose (10ml ).It will make you relax, and also balances your heart beat.

That was my personal experience...
